There are several species of pilo, all of which are endemic to Hawaii. It typically grows in forests and kipukas as a short understory tree, and its red, orange, or yellow fruits are an important food source for native birds like ʻōmaʻo and nene. Pilo seeds must be planted soon after the fruits ripen, and will take up to four months to germinate.
