Lonomea, also known as ʻaulu or Oʻahu soapberry is an endemic Hawaiian tree found in dry and mesic forests on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. It is characterized by its rough, light gray to white bark, simple oval leaves with a yellow midrib, and non-edible, date-like fruits. The hard seeds were historically used for medicinal purposes and to make leis. These handsome trees are related to Manele, lychee, and longan. They are easy to grow in dry areas and require little maintenance once established. Soak seeds overnight and allow 3-6 weeks for germination.
