The beautiful cream colored cutlers of hōʻawa flowers are very fragrant, and the unusual seed pods with bright orange interior make a bold statement. Hōʻawa typically grow in sunny areas on leeward sides between 1200-3500 ft elevation, but readily adapts to lower elevations. The shrubby small trees grow slowly and have hard wood with beautiful dark green foliage year round. They make a great hedge, screen, or specimen plant in any collection. Seeds usually sprout within three months, but can take up to nine months to germinate so be patient. Avoid disturbing their sensitive roots when transplanting.
